International businesses need more than just basic services: they need advanced services tailored to their needs in a flexible way. They use telecommunications services in a strategic way, usually as a sales and marketing tool.
Italtel can supply the technology necessary to provide these new, intelligent services in an efficient and cost- effective way in any size network, starting from the pilot project stage and growing to handle enormous volumes of traffic.
The Intelligent Network is thus a tool for increasing your revenues while offering better services to your clients.
The Intelligent Network is two concepts: it is a network architecture and it is a series of services.
The services, which can be varied and customized in a virtually unlimited number of ways.
These new services will not be confined to national boundaries, and they will cross traditional boundardies between networks and network operators as we know them today. Many services are offered in cooperation with independent service providers.
The architecture of the Intelligent Network has been standardized by ETSI.
The fundamental concept is that the details of each service such as numbering plans are in a data base called the Service Control Point, while the actual execution of the service is still in the switching system, which is called the Service Switching Point.
The INAP is an ITU-T standardized interface which defines the connection between one or more SCPs and the rest of the network. There can be several SCPs, either for traffic reasons or because different services are implemented on different SCPs.
The SSP is not a dedicated system serving only IN traffic: it is a function which is added to a normal urban exchange. In Italy, for example, there are more than 600 SSPs in service from three different vendors. These are normal urban exchanges serving normal traffic.
The Intelligent Peripheral is an announcement machine which connects to the SSP using normal SS No. 7 trunks with ISUP and connects to the SCP using INAP.
The SMS is a data base management system for the SCP; the SCP can be thought of as a fast, reliable transaction (traffic) processor while the SMS is an off-line system which executes all the complex data base creation and audit software with equally complex human-machine interfaces. The great differences between these two types of functions is the reason for implementing them on separate computers.
The SCE is a tool for creating new services using a high-level language. This is discussed in more detail later.
The SSPs, according to the ITU-T model, are normal urban exchanges offering normal telephone service. It is also possible to create dedicated SSPs.
In either case, the interface with the rest of the telephone network uses normal trunks with any type of signaling.
