Please read the following instructions carefully. In this phase of the experiment your memory will be tested for the things you did earlier. On each test you will have to indicate whether the item that you see was in the materials you worked on. In addition, you should circle the word "remember" or "know" next to each statement indicating whether or not you remember the item from the presented material or you just know on some other basis that the item was presented. Please read the following instructions to find out how to make the "remember" and "know" judgments.
Remember judgments: If your recognition of the item is accompanied by a conscious recollection of its prior occurrence in the presented material, then circle "Remember". "Remember" is the ability to become consciously aware again of some aspect or aspects of what happened or what was experienced at the time the item was presented (e.g., aspects of the physical sound of the phrase or word, or of something that happened in the room, or of what you were thinking or doing at the time, including any mental images you might have formed). In other words the "remember" statement or word should bring back to mind a particular association, sound, or something about its position in time (i.e., what came before or after the statement or word).
Know judgments: "Know" responses should be made when you recognize that the item was in the presented material but you cannot consciously recollect anything about its actual occurrence or what happened or what was experienced at the time of its occurrence. In other words circle "know" when you are certain of recognizing the item but the it fails to evoke any specific conscious recollection (so for instance, the statement or word may seem kind of familiar, or may seem to just jump out at you, or you may thing that it just seems right to you or you may just have this feeling of having encountered the item in the materials).
To further clarify the difference between these two judgments (i.e., "Remember" vs. "Know"), here are a few examples. If someone asks for your name, you would typically respond in the "know" sense without becoming consciously aware of anything about a particular event or experience; however, when asked about the last movie you saw, you would typically respond in the "remember" sense, that is, becoming consciously aware again of some aspect of the experience. If you have any question regarding these judgments, please ask the experimenter. Thank you.
